TERZA LETTERA APERTA A VLADIMIR PUTIN

Egregio Signor Putin,

THIRD OPEN LETTER TO VLADIMIR PUTIN

Dear Mr Putin it will soon be almost a year since the beginning of the Russia/Ukraine conflict that you “triggered” for who knows what real reasons, or maybe we know them. In fact, it is not necessary to live in the two countries to understand that the basis of this conflict is dominated by questions of power, borders, pride and much more … This protracted state has so far caused many deaths, injuries, invalids and immense destruction that the international mass media document for us with footage and commentary every day. Witnessing the uncontainable agony of the respective populations is humiliating even for us who are outside your context, even if there are many consequences on an international level. Although you are increasingly determined to go on the offensive, and your opponents are even more determined to defend the right to independence and personal safety, I believe that your conscience is like a container that can only house guilt and remorse, if only to accumulate many crosses with and without names; all of her (and our) brothers of hers who personally did nothing to her and, as always happens in times of war conflicts, civilian victims of any age pay the consequences as well as the military. In the world, there have always been those who fight to defend human dignity and health and there are those who destroy them. In this regard, I would like to remind you that next March will be the 30th anniversary of the death of prof. Albert Bruce Sabin (1906-1993), the Polish scientist naturalized in the United States who defeated polio with his vaccine. Well, I remind you that Russia was one of the first countries to benefit (free of charge) from the polio vaccine, the result of which was manifested in a significant reduction in cases. This historical episode should lead you to reflect by inserting it in your historical memory and conscience, from which we have the duty to respect and defend the life of others and, even if it may seem rhetorical to reiterate that since they have existed, human beings are subject to ” live together” in eternal conflict with each other for an infinite series of causes and reasons. But fortunately and for the balance of the species, not everyone is prone to the most absurd atrocities as the many chapters of History remind us, consequently it would be a duty on his part and on those who follow him, to consider the most significant examples that have determined and they determine a relationship of peace and progress between peoples. Now, if in these eleven months of conflict damages and costs were also to be highlighted (and some indirect consequences at an international level), the weight on your conscience would be uncontainable, and may God grant you the benefit of forgiveness on condition of your repentance, and with the commitment to leave a legacy of dispositions and means for the reconstruction of the human personality and of all the goods that you have stolen, not only from your “adversaries” but also from your own compatriots. Finally, I remind you that Prof. Sabin made his vaccine available free of charge to humanity, renouncing to patent it. A philanthropic gesture, like few others in history, that even a head of state (even a political one) should consider. at least ideally, as nothing prevents him from being “more human” and at the service of the community, putting aside despotism, careerism and that fatuous sense of omnipotence. You see, Mr Putin, personally I always draw excellent ideas from the wisest ancestors, such as our fellow European citizen Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (Molière – 1622-1673), who maintained: «It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, for what we don’t do.” I wish you a good reflection and I send you best regards.
